TSL Workshops and courses

Individual and team-based workshops and courses designed to get you off the hamster wheel of overwork and into the joyful research career you deserve

Workshops and courses that work

Cross-disciplinary work is essential for conducting the kind of high-impact, world-changing research you want to do. But coordinating communication, methods, tasks, and deliverables across multiple labs, disciplines, and institutions can add overhead and quickly become all you do. You didn’t spend years training to be a project coordinator! The TSL workshops and courses are designed to help you  build skills and practices that systematize the work of team science, giving you more time and energy to do science and the confidence to become the leader you want to be.

I have delivered practical, actionable team science and collaborative research workshops, courses, and seminars to hundreds of researchers at research organizations across the US, including the University of Wisconsin, Northwestern University, University of Texas-Southwestern, Stanford University, Columbia University, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. As a scientist, I ensure that all of my trainings draw on rigorous research and proven approaches and include a detailed evaluation plan.

Any TSL workshops can be customized and delivered for your organization or audience. I am also available for Grand Rounds style seminars designed to introduce your researchers and research staff to the opportunities and challenges of team science and interdisciplinary research. Collaboration Planning Facilitator Training

Collaboration Planning is a 90-minute structured session that works with your team to think through your approach to working together, proactively addressing the areas that most frequently cause conflict in teams, including authorship, communications, and project management. This training is offered in two varieties: (1) for team leaders working with their own teams or (2) research leaders interested in developing a Collaboration Planning program at their institution.

Building a Collaboration-Ready Lab

Running a science lab, no matter the discipline, is like building a start-up company within a massive bureaucracy, yet few scientists receiving any training in the management and leadership skills and practices required to lead a successful research program. This six-month workshop is designed to help you identify and build the skills and practices you need to create systems for your lab that give you time and space to do the science that you love.

Becoming Fearless: Building Psychological Safety in Science Teams

One of the greatest predictors of team success is an environment of psychological safety, where team members feel free to share their thoughts and ideas without fear of reprisal. PS is especially important on science teams, which are often very hierarchical, have transient membership, and where sharing ideas and knowledge are mission critical.

In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn what psychological safety is (and isn’t!), how to measure the psychological safety of your team, and develop key strategies for improving psychological safety among all of your team members. This workshop is for anyone working on or with science teams or training scientists in being compassionate, empathetic leaders.
